Final Spot on 2012 Olympic Wrestling Team To Be Determined Live In Times Square On June 7

Shawn Bunch, Reece Humphrey, Coleman Scott to battle in U.S. Olympic Team Wrestle-off at 60 kg in New York City As Add-On To USA-Russia “Grapple In The Apple” Event

Dake/Gentry and Maroulis/Hudson exhibition bouts, along with Beat the Streets youth matches, also added to schedule

The U.S. Olympic Team Wrestle-off for the 60 kg/132 lbs. position on the U.S. Olympic Team in men’s freestyle wrestling will be held in New York City on Thursday, June 7.

The event will be held alongside the USA vs. Russia international freestyle dual meet set for Times Square in New York City, also on Thursday, June 7.

Three wrestlers will participate in the U.S. Olympic Team Wrestle-off:

•Shawn Bunch, Columbus, Ohio (Gator WC)

•Reece Humphrey,Columbus, Ohio (New York AC)

•Coleman Scott, Stillwater, Okla. (Gator WC)

The U.S. Olympic Team Wrestle-off became necessary because the United States had not yet qualified to compete at the London Olympic Games at 60 kg/132 lbs. in men’s freestyle prior to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling in Iowa City, Iowa, April 21-22.

According to the Olympic Trials Procedures for Men’s Freestyle Wrestling, USA Wrestling could hold athletes out of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in order to participate in Olympic Games Qualifying Events. Bunch and Humphrey were chosen to train for the Olympic Games Qualifiers.

Also according to the Olympic Trials Procedures, the winner of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at the weight class would also become eligible for the Secondary Olympic Trials if the United States was able to qualify the weight class. Scott was the champion at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City.

On April 27, Bunch placed third in the World Olympic Games Qualifying Tournament in Taiyuan, China, which qualified the United States to compete in the London Games at 60 kg/132 lbs. At that event, the top three athletes in each weight class qualified their nation to participate in the Olympics.

Based upon the Olympic Trials Procedures, as the athlete who qualified the USA for the Olympics, Bunch moves directly into the best-of-three Championship Series for the Olympic berth.

Earlier on June 7, there will be a single preliminary match between Humphrey and Scott to determine which athlete advances to the Championship Series against Bunch. The match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Times Square.

Bunch will face the Humphrey/Scott winner in the first match of the Championship Series at 6:00 p.m. in Times Square. The second match will be held at approximately 7:20 p.m. If necessary, the third match will be held at approximately 8:20 p.m.

Bunch was ranked No. 2 at 60 kg/132 lbs. on 2011-2012 Freestyle Team USA. He placed second in both the 2011 U.S. Open and the 2011 World Team Trials. He was a member of the 2009 U.S. World Team and has won two U.S. Open titles. He was an NCAA runner-up and two-time All-American for Edinboro and hails from Leavenworth, Kan.

Scott was ranked No. 3 on 2011-2012 Freestyle Team USA. He won the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, defeating Logan Stieber in the Championship Series. He went undefeated in five matches at the 2012 Freestyle World Cup. He was third at the World Team Trials the last three years and was a 2008 U.S. Open runner-up. Scott was a 2008 NCAA champion and four-time All-American for Oklahoma State and hails from Waynesburg, Pa.

The international dual meet between the United States and Russia will feature the other sixU.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers who won titles at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and will represent the United States this summer at the London Games.

The U.S. lineup will feature Olympic Trials champions Sam Hazewinkel (55 kg), Jared Frayer (66 kg), Jordan Burroughs (74 kg), Jake Herbert (84 kg), Jake Varner (96 kg) and Tervel Dlagnev (120 kg). Competing in the dual at 60 kg will be Olympic Trials runner-up Logan Stieber.

Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc. has also announced two additional Senior-level exhibition matches featuring top stars in both men’s and women’s freestyle wrestling.

There will be a battle at 74 kg/163 lbs. in men’s freestyle between college wrestling sensation and three-time NCAA champion Kyle Dake (Ithaca, N.Y./New York AC) and a two-time Olympian and NCAA champion Matt Gentry of Canada.

Dake has won three NCAA titles for Cornell University, and became the first wrestler ever to win NCAA Div. I national titles at three different weight classes. Dake placed an impressive fourth at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in freestyle wrestling. Gentry, who grew up in Oregon, was an NCAA champion for Stanford University. He competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games for Canada and has qualified to compete again at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. Gentry recently beat a strong international field to win the Pan American Olympic Games Qualifying Tournament in Florida.

The women’s match will be a battle between two-time U.S. World Team member and three-time FILA Junior World medalist Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./New York AC) and 2011 U.S. World Team Trials runner-up Ashley Hudson (Wildwood, Mo./Gator WC-OCU).

Jon ‘Bones’ Jones Apologizes for DUI — ‘I Screwed Up, Big Time’

Breaking News

UFC champion Jon “Bones” Jones says he’s “truly sorry” for letting down his fans when he was arrested for DUI this past weekend … saying, “I screwed up, big time.”

TMZ broke the story … the 24-year-old was arrested Saturday morning after totaling his Bentley in Upstate New York.

But yesterday, Jones reportedly posted a message on his Facebook page saying, “I screwed up, big time. Just needed to say thank you to all you guys for being amazing friends/supporters.”

He continued, “Although the hell that will come with this hasn’t even started yet, I want you guys to know how much better you’ve all made me feel, not only about this situation but about life, everything.”

“It’s good to feel that people are there and care. With that being said, I felt I should apologize to you first.”

“I’m truly sorry to those of you that I may have embarrassed in any way, to those of you with kids that I may have let down. I will prove to them as well as to myself, that no matter what is happening in life, we can always work our way back and make things even better than before.”

A Nevada State Athletic Commission meeting on Chael Sonnen and Nick Diaz streamed here on The Underground at noon ET (9 a.m. PT), courtesy of MMAJunkie.

While government regulatory hearings at the State level are ordinarily not compelling (think CSpan, but boring) this one involved the two most polarizing figures in MMA, Chael Sonnen and Nick Diaz.

Sonnen is requesting a TUE (therapeutic-use exemption for testosterone-replacement therapy) for his UFC 148 rematch against Anderson Silva on July 7, 2012, which was granted.

Diaz, who is currently under suspension for a failed drug test, has been suspended for one year retroactive to his Feb. 4 loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143, and was fined 30% of both his purse and his OTN bonus.

It is the second time in five years he was banned by the NSAC after marijuana metabolites were found in his system.

Ross Goodman, Diaz’s attorney, argued that neither marijuana nor marijuana metabolites are illegal for medical marijuana patients in the state of Nevada or California, where his client resides and obtained his hemp license to treat his case of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Furthermore, marijuana itself was not found in his system, marijuana metabolites were. Marijuana metabolites are not listed as a banned substance with the World Anti-Doping Agency, whose laws have been adopted by the NSAC.

Goodman also claimed that Diaz checked “no” on his pre-fight medical questionnaire when asked if he had taken any prescribed or over-the-counter drugs within two weeks of the fight, or if he suffered from any serious medical conditions because the form only had questions about “prescription” and “over-the-counter” medication, and neither of those applied in Diaz’s situation.

Moreover, Diaz does not consider his case of ADHD to be a serious medical condition because it doesn’t prevent him from fighting like a broken bone or injury would.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ECSC Responds to Lynn-Maromo Controversy; MFC Sets Rematch

(Edmonton, Alberta, May 21, 2012) Maximum Fighting Championships, Canada’s largest mixed martial arts promotion, put on its 33rd installment on May 4th which featured a lightweight bout between California based fighter Adam Lynn and Edmonton local Mukai Maromo, the winner to be the next challenger for the lightweight title in August. The fight however, concluded as a worthy candidate for “controversy of the year” as the commission appointed judges awarded Maromo the win, a decision that caused an eruption of disagreement from the viewers and commentators alike.

This is not the first time the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission (ECSC) has made such an egregious error: as recently as last June at MFC 30, lightweight fighters Robert Washington and Curtis Demarce battled to a judges’ decision that left everyone confused. The Illinois based fighter Robert Washington was initially announced the winner after the scorecards were totaled, only to have that announcement overturned by the commission in favor of the Canadian fighter, Curtis Demarce.

The governing body for these two events, the ECSC, headed by Executive Director Pat Reid responded to questions regarding the Lynn-Maromo controversy and the underlying issues of judging competence by consulting with the Technical Advisory Committee. However, for the Lynnn-Maromo fight, the ECSC came to the conclusion, communicated by Mr. Reid that “once a judgement call is made, even understanding human error, the result cannot be changed.”

“As for our Commission, I have spoken to the two judges in question and we will make our appropriate adjustments and training at our end; that I can promise you.”

Meanwhile, Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) quickly responded by scheduling an immediate rematch between Adam Lynn and Mukai Maromo to take place at MFC 34, on August 10, 2012.

Las Vegas, Nevada – On Friday evening’s episode of The Ultimate Fighter® Live, UFC President Dana White officially announced Renan Barao, 26-1 with 1 no-contest, will face Urijah Faber for the UFC Interim Bantamweight Title at UFC 148.

The fight card change comes on the heels of reigning UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz’s knee injury, and subsequent withdrawal, in early May.

The owner of the longest unbeaten streak in mixed martial arts (27 fights without a loss), the Brazilian ‘Baron’ has stormed his way to the top of the UFC’s 135lbs division beating – in succession – Cole Escovedo, Brad Pickett and Scott Jorgensen.

The 25-year-old Barao said: “I’m very surprised to be the No.1 contender to now fight Urijah Faber but I’m so very excited to fight for the title and replace Dominick Cruz. I’m very confident. I have been training a long time for this chance and I will be ready to go out there and put on a good show.”
