TICKETS ON SALE THIS FRIDAY, JULY 29 at 12 p.m. ET

SAN JOSE, Calif.– STRIKEFORCE will make its second trip to the Buckeye State this year when it brings the STRIKEFORCE WORLD GRAND PRIX: HEAVYWEIGHT TOURNAMENT semi-finals to U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati on Saturday, Sept. 10., live on SHOWTIME at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).  The World Heavyweight Grand Prix finalists will be determined when former UFC® heavyweight champion “The Baby Faced Assassin” Josh Barnett takes on Russian sensation Sergei Kharitonov, and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva battles tournament alternate Daniel “DC” Cormier.

The card will also feature STRIKEFORCE middleweight champ Ronald “Jacare” Souza defending his title against top contender Luke Rockhold, as well as a light heavyweight collision between Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal and Roger Gracie. A fifth yet-to-be announced fight will air on the SHOWTIME portion of the event.

The main card action will air live on SHOWTIME at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

“Cincinnati is an incredible sports town and we’re excited to bring the World Grand Prix: Heavyweight Tournament to the great fans here,” said STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker.  “We’re going to see who advances to the tournament finals. Barnett vs. Kharitonov pits two incredible finishers against one another, and ‘Big Foot’ is looking to keep the momentum rolling after his big win over Fedor when he meets unbeaten Daniel Cormier. When you add in the middleweight title fight and the other great bouts, you can see that we’ve pulled out all the stops for our return to Ohio.”

Having defeated seven straight opponents, including a slick submission win over Brett Rogers in the previous round of the Grand Prix, Josh Barnett (30-5) feels he is the only man that has what it takes to win this tournament.  The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, who holds career victories over legends Randy Couture, Dan Severn and Minotauro Nogueira, looks to advance and book a spot in the finals when he takes on Golden Glory product, Sergei Kharitonov (18-4).  Born in Plesetsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia, Kharitonov still serves active duty for the Russian Airborne Troops while training full time.  Though he most recently defeated Andrei Arlovski to earn this fight, he also holds notable wins over Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum.

Brazilian-born heavyweight Antonio “Big Foot” Silva (16-2) is on a tear through the division thanks to recent wins over Fedor Emelianenko, Arlovski and Mike Kyle.  Silva, who holds black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo and karate, will need everything he’s got when he matches up with American Kickboxing Academy’s top heavyweight prospect, Daniel Cormier(8-0).  The former Oklahoma State University wrestler, who was also a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic wrestling team, steps in as an alternate for the injured Alistair Overeem, and hopes to make the most of this massive opportunity.

Team Black House fighter and current STRIKEFORCE middleweight champ Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (14-2, 1 NC) is currently riding a four-fight win streak that includes victories over Tim Kennedy and Robbie Lawler.  The Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo black belt looks to successfully defend his belt for the second time when he takes on Santa Cruz’s Luke Rockhold (7-1).  An American Kickboxing Academy standout and Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, Rockhold seeks his seventh consecutive victory and the STRIKEFORCE 185-pound crown.

Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal (7-1) is looking to make his way back up the light heavyweight ladder and reclaim his throne.  The former champ had won seven straight before running into Rafael Cavalcante last August, but he’s now back hungrier than ever to return to the win column.  Having wrestled at Oklahoma State University, Lawal will have to rely on his takedowns and heavy hands when he squares off against second-degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Roger Gracie (4-0).  A member of the famed Gracie family, Roger is undefeated and recently scored a victory over former UFC and PRIDE® star Kevin Randleman.

PLUS:

ROBBIE LAWLER vs. TIM KENNEDY

PAUL DALEY vs. TYRON WOODLEY

SCOTT SMITH vs. TAREC SAFFIEDINE

SATURDAY, JULY 30

SEARS CENTRE ARENA

HOFFMAN ESTATES, ILL.

Live on SHOWTIME at 10 p.m. ET/PT (Delayed on West Coast)

STRIKEFORCE returns to Illinois for the first time since 2009 with one of its top fight cards of the year.  Having already announced the heavyweight super fight main event between Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko and Dan “Hendo” Henderson, STRIKEFORCE officials today confirmed the remainder of the loaded main card, which will air live on SHOWTIME at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Women’s 135-pound champion Marloes “Rumina” Coenen will defend her crown against Miesha “Takedown” Tatein the exciting co-main event, while middleweight contenders “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler and Tim “The Hero” Kennedy are also set to collide. Plus, the night’s action will feature a pivotal welterweight bout pitting Paul “Semtex” Daley and Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley, as well as a 170-pound contest between Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith and Tarec “Sponge” Saffiedine.

“Fedor versus Hendo is the super fight fans have been waiting for and we’re proud to have also stacked the rest of this card with exciting fights,” STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker said. “Marloes has proven to be one of the best women’s mixed martial artists on the planet, but Miesha could be her toughest challenge yet. When you add knockout artists like Paul Daley, Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith, as well as rising stars such as Tyron Woodley, Tim Kennedy and Tarec Saffiedine, this is the type of card that will deliver some explosive fights.”

Tickets for STRIKEFORCE: FEDOR vs. HENDERSON, are avilable in the colume on the right side of this webpage.

Having already successfully defended her 135-pound women’s title against Liz Carmouche in March,Coenen (19-4) is ready to get back into the cage and show MMA fans why she’s one of the best female athletes in the world.  Fighting out of the Golden Glory gym in Amsterdam, Netherlands alongside Alistair and Valentijn Overeem, Coenen is looking to display the grappling skills and signature submissions that have made her one of the division’s elite.  She’ll take on top contender Tate(11-2), who is currently riding a five-fight win streak that dates back to October 2009.  The Tacoma, Wash. native, who currently trains at Team Alpha Male in Sacramento with UFC bantamweights Urijah Faber and Joseph Benavidez, is ready to end Coenen’s reign atop the 135-pound division.

A veteran of UFC, Pride and EliteXC, Lawler(18-7, 1 NC) hits the STRIKEFORCE cage once again on a mission to rule the middleweight division.  A member of Matt Hughes’s H.I.T. Squad in Granite City, Ill., Lawler’s strong wrestling base and knockout power have provided a quick end to many of his past fights.  He’ll look for another dramatic finish on July 30 when he takes on San Luis Obispo, Calif.’s Kennedy(13-3).  The U.S. Army Green Beret and Operation Iraqi Freedom vet has been given the opportunity to fully dedicate himself to his MMA career and has put the rest of the division on alert. Coming off a recent win over Melvin Manhoef, the Greg Jackson-trained fighter seeks another impressive win when he meets Lawler at the Sears Centre.

Top welterweight and British knockout artist Daley(27-10-2) looks to spark another run at the welterweight crown he takes on undefeated two-time All-American wrestler Woodley(8-0) on July 30. The road back to the title won’t be an easy one. Woodley, who starred at the University of Missouri, is one of the fastest-rising fighters in the sport thanks to his versatility and knack for finishing opponents.

Former top middleweight contender Smith(17-8, 1NC) steps into the STRIKEFORCE cage this month with the goal of wreaking havoc on the welterweight division. Owning wins over the likes of Cung Le, Kyle Noke and Tim Kennedy, the Muay Thai and boxing standout will be pushed to the limit when he meets Belgium’s Saffiedine (10-3). Currently training with Dan Henderson’s Team Quest in Temecula, Calif., the 24-year-old karate black belt will look for another submission win to add to his already impressive total.

MAIN EVENT:

BOBBY VOELKER vs. ROGER BOWLING III

PLUS:

SARAH KAUFMAN vs. LIZ CARMOUCHE

LAVAR JOHNSON vs. DEVIN COLE

ADLAN AMAGOV vs. RON STALLINGS

FRIDAY, JULY 22

THE PEARL AT THE PALMS CASINO RESORT

LAS VEGAS, NEV.

Live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (Delayed on West Coast)

SAN JOSE, Calif.– In 2010, Bobby Voelker and Roger Bowling engaged in two of the most exciting contests of the year, splitting victories and leaving fans craving a third fight to settle the score. On July 22, the wait will come to an end as STRIKEFORCE Challengerspresents the rubber match at the Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nev., live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

If that wasn’t enough, STRIKEFORCE Challengers also features Sarah Kaufman taking on Liz “Girl-Rilla” Carmouche in a women’s welterweight matchup, a heavyweight contest between Lavar “Big” Johnson and Devin Cole, as well as a 185-pound bout between Adlan Amagov and Ronald “The Choir Boy” Stallings, and one yet to be announced bout that will air on Showtime.

The event will mark STRIKEFORCE’s debut at the Palms and the organization expects to put on several events at the fight-friendly venue throughout 2011.

“The rubber match between Voelker and Bowling will not only settle the score between the two, but it will also help determine another rising contender in the welterweight division,” STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker said. “This event on July 22 is loaded with potentially explosive fights and we’re excited to kick off our relationship with the Palms with such a great card.”

STRIKEFORCE Challengers is presented by Rockstar Energy Drink.

Kansas City’s Bobby Voelker (23-8) has proven that defeating him is no easy task, as he’s shown by winning three of his last four, including the last fight with Bowling in October.  This July he’ll have his sights set on Cincinnati’s Roger Bowling (9-1), who earned his nickname “Relentless” thanks to scoring seven of his nine professional victories by way of stoppage. Fresh off a win over Josh Thornsburg in March, the 28-year-old now turns his attention to winning the trilogy.

Former welterweight champ Sarah Kaufman (13-1) returns for a pivotal fight that could determine the division’s next title challenger. With her only career loss coming to Marloes Coenen last year, the 25-year-old Canadian Kaufman is a tremendous finisher with 10 of her 13 wins coming by way of knockout.  Former U.S. Marine Liz Carmouche (5-1) steps back into the cage for the first time since battling STRIKEFORCE women’s welterweight champion Coenen in an exciting bout last March.  The aggressive striker, who currently trains in San Diego, Calif., meets Kaufman in what should be an explosive 135-pound women’s bout.

Lavar Johnson (15-4), having lost only once since August of 2008, holds wins over the likes of Shane del Rosario and Virgil Swicker.  He looks to spark a run up the heavyweight ladder when he meets Team Quest productDevin Cole (18-9-1), in what will surely be an explosive matchup. Cole, a wrestling standout who won a national championship with Southern Oregon University, is 5-2 in his last seven bouts.

Since losing his first and only bout, Russian Adlan Amagov (7-1-1) has gone unbeaten in his last eight fights. On July 22, he debuts in STRIKEFORCE and looks to continue his impressive run.  Currently riding a two-fight win streak, Ron Stallings (9-3) has made quick work of his opponents.  With all of his wins coming by either by KO or submission, expect fireworks from the Temple Hills, Md. product in this bout.

Gina Caranos Return is Squashed

Controversy Surrounds Gina Carano’s “Revoked Medical Clearance”

Written by Tom

Help 5thRound.com spread the word

Gina Carano

During Tuesday’s “Strikeforce: Overeem vs.Werdum” media call, company CEO Scott Coker announced Gina Carano’s eagerly anticipated return would be delayed after her medical clearance was revoked. “Conviction” was set to take center stage inside the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on June 18th.

“I know that she’s really disappointed,” Coker stated. “It’s an unfortunate situation, but we have no further information at this time.”

Thankfully, SI.com was able to get in contact with the public information officer for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. According to Susan Stanford, Carano’s contestant application, which included a physician’s exam, an ophthalmologic screening and required blood test results, had already been approved.

“Gina Carano had met all of the state of Texas’ requirements and the agency received notice today that she was off the card,” Stanford told Loretta Hunt of SI.com.

Outside of a brief statement read by Coker during today’s call, Carano has been mum regarding her abrupt exit.

“I’m certainly disappointed not to be fighting on June 18th. I’d like to thank Greg Jackson and Team Jackson for such an amazing camp. I hope this is only a brief setback,” Carano wrote.

Since getting her supermodel-esque face roughed up by Strikeforce champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos in August 2009, Carano disappeared completely from the mixed martial arts landscape. Carano owned a perfect 7-0 record entering the highly anticipated scrap , but proved to be no match against Cyborg’s ruthless striking and aggression.

The 29-year-old had been pursuing a career in Hollywood during her hiatus.

UFC ANNOUNCES UNPRECEDENTED ACCIDENT INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR ITS ATHLETES

Customized Program That Complements Existing Event Coverage Now in Place

for Nearly 350 UFC and STRIKEFORCE® Athletes

Las Vegas, Nevada – Zuffa, LLC, owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship® brand, announced today that nearly 350 UFC® and STRIKEFORCE® independent contractor athletes will now be eligible for customized accident insurance coverage. The coverage will be underwritten by Houston Casualty Insurance Company and complement existing event coverage the company already provides its athletes. Never before has a combat sports promoter provided coverage to nearly 350 athletes, and this unprecedented policy will cover accidental injuries suffered by athletes while training, as well as non-training incidents such as automobile accidents.

To date, Zuffa event-related insurance has always met or exceeded Athletic Commission requirements and has covered all injuries sustained during competition. After exploring the purchase of “training insurance” for its athletes for several years – much of which was met with difficulty in finding an insurance company willing to insure mixed martial artists – Zuffa officials were able to secure a comprehensive plan through A+ rated Houston Casualty.

The new policy adds 24-hour worldwide medical life insurance and dental coverage, as well as emergency medical evacuation. Zuffa will pay 100 percent of the premiums for its athletes and have an employee dedicated to handling and filing all claims.

“Our athletes are some of the very best in the world and we’ve committed significant financial resources to provide them with insurance that complements the gold standard we have set for event-related coverage,” UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said. “We’re pleased to provide coverage that enables our athletes to seek and receive treatment for injuries sustained while preparing for bouts.”

“As this sport continues to grow, we have been working hard to secure additional insurance coverage so that our athletes can perform at the highest levels,” UFC President Dana White said. “We’re proud to give our athletes access to this type of insurance.”
